About Us

Making a difference in Michigan
The mission of the US Math Recovery Council is
To transform numeracy education
To connect research with practice
To empower educators to advance student mathematical thinking and success
through Math Recovery principles.
Educators in Michigan have been involved in Math Recovery courses for nearly 20 years. We have found that by focusing on student thinking, and by engaging with students at the cutting edge of their abilities, all children will learn math at a high level. The Math Recovery teachers in Michigan are excited to engage in mathematics experiences. You will find classroom teachers, para-professionals, special education teachers, teachers of English learners, and administrators participating in Math Recovery courses. You will also find Michigan teachers facilitating these courses throughout the state. Not only are the Michigan Math Recovery teachers committed to learning and using Math Recovery content, they are also committed to sharing it with others.
Math Recovery in Michigan is committed to growing the capacity of mathematics teachers and leaders throughout the state. We are educators dedicated to opening doors for children and promoting numeracy education through our commitment to the mission and principles of the US Math Recovery Council.

Teacher Testimonials

"I used to teach math so my students could 'do it'. Now I teach math so they understand it."
-
Beth Kirby from Ludington, Michigan
"Before AVMR training our collegial conversations sounded like, 'He knows how to add, if he can use his fingers and his toes,' or 'My class would do better at math if they knew their facts.' Now our conversations sound very professional. We say things such as, 'These are my perceptual counters so I've modified their work to include...,' or 'This group has internalized the structure of..., so their next step will be...' Much like reading records allows the teacher intimate knowledge of your students as readers, AVMR training will allow you to see their cognitive abilities and determine the best path to bring about the greatest mathematical learning gains."

Lauren Johnson from Muskegon, Mi

Sfard & Linchevski

"It seems very important that we try to motivate our students to actively struggle for meaning at every stage of the learning"
